Grammar points
You already know the first type of adjective declension – after the indefinite article (see lesson 7, activity 2). Let’s examine the second type – after the definite article:
Singular Masculine Feminine Neuter N der alte Mann die alte Frau das kleine Kind А den alten Mann die alte Frau das kleine Kind D dem alten Mann der alten Frau dem kleinen Kind G des alten Mannes der alten Frau des kleinen Kindes Plural Masculine Feminine Neuter N die alten Männer die alten Frauen die kleinen Kinder А die alten Männer die alten Frauen die kleinen Kinder D den alten Männern den alten Frauen den kleinen Kindern G der alten Männer der alten Frauen der kleinen Kinder Such endings adjectives have after the definite article der (die, das), the demonstrative pronoun dieser (diese, dieses), the interrogative pronoun welcher (welche, welches) and some others, in plural after the possessive pronouns mein, Ihr etc., and also after the negation kein and the pronoun alle.
You already know how the genitive case is formed (see lesson 5, activity 1). In the genitive case, if we need to put a proper noun, which is used without the article, in this case, we use the preposition von:
ein Buch von Schiller a book by Schiller
